Nassau County New York Raccoon Control Situation: Good morning, I live in Nassau County, Long Island, NY and I have a raccoon in the ceiling of my family room. I hear the heavy dragging and squealing associated with raccoons. There are also at least three living in my attic. I have seen them leaving my roof and climbing down my wrought iron pillar which cannot be removed. I understand that I need a new roof, because it is old and also because the raccoons have breached and destroyed it in several places. Unfortunately I cannot afford $11,000 to get my roof done right now, though my plan is to get it done by the fall of this year. Is there anything I can do to rid my house of these disgusting animals? I have small children and I worry about what we are breathing in. I have tried loud music, banging, and I have a 125lb Italian Mastiff that barks all the time. She can rip the raccoons in two but I would never jeopardize her safety for a disgusting animal intruder. I used to love raccoons in a storybook, romanticized sort of way, but now I hate, even loathe them. What is the best course of action to remove them and in what timeframe? Should I wait until I am going to have the roof done? A week, two weeks, a month before I do the roof? I will also need the attic cleaned and sanitized. Who does that type of work? What about my ceiling? My husband wants to block off the room and rip the ceiling down during the day and let them run into a trap. This seems dangerous, borderline rogue to me, but we have had it so I understand my husbands frustration. Any assistance or information you can provide based on your expertise will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Ayanna
